Go Pride!

When Jillain Passafaro of the 8u Pride could not be with her team, She did the next best thing.  Im told the best view of this is from the lighthouse at LBI.

It's all very well to have courage and skill and it's fine to be counted a star,
But the single deed with its touch of thrill Doesn't tell the man you are;
For there's no lone hand in the game we play, we must work to a bigger scheme,
 And the thing that counts in the world to-day Is, how do you pull with the team
They may sound your praise and call you great, they may single you out for fame,
 But you must work with your running mate or you'll never win the game;
Oh, never the work of life is done by the man with a selfish dream,
For the battle is lost or the battle is won by the spirit of the team.
You may think it fine to be praised for skill,
 But a greater thing to do
 Is to set your mind and set your will On the goal that's just in view;
It's helping your fellowman to score When his chances hopeless seem;
 Its forgetting self-till the game is over and fighting for the team

8u Pride wins the NEBS Giuliana Velona Firecracker Tournement
by posted 07/02/2018

8u Pride caps off its summer season with a tournament win

The 8u Pride team capped off an undefeated weekend going 5-0 beating the tough South Plainfield Tigers 15-6 in the 2018 Giuliana Velona Firecracker summer tournament.  Prior to this weekend, 8u Pride had been runner up, taking second place in 2 of 3 tournaments they competed in this summer.

 This tournament, hosted by North Edison Baseball and Softball, celebrates the life of a very special little girl who at only 8 years old passed away 4 years ago after battling Chordoma cancer.

   Having known Giuliana’s parent's for close to 30 years and using the power of social media to stay connected with old friends, I was able to watch this beautiful little girl grow up and I was humbled to witness this amazing little girl “fight like a girl” and battle her illness with amazing grace and an unforgettable smile.

 As I recall, one of Giuliana’s favorite things was playing softball while be coached by her father Rob so when I learned of this tournament and who it honored I knew my team needed to be part of it.

 To be able to compete with my 8-year-old girls, with my 8-year-old daughter, getting to do what Giuliana loved to do, where she loved to do it, was a great honor.

As our team huddled before the championship game started we gathered hands in the familiar pile, coach’s, fathers and young ladies, I felt a tremendous energy as I told the girls about Giuliana and why the tournament was named after her.  As a team we proclaimed that we were playing this game in honor of Giuliana and as the team called her name, a sobering reminder of the importance of cherishing each and every day and the value of time togetherand sharing things we love with our children came over me.  A gift on this day that only Giuliana, the Velona family and NEBS could have given us win or lose.

As fate would have it our 8u team and our 10u team went the distance and we each took home the championships in our divisions in 2 days of plus 100-degree weather.  What a great two day's for the Pride program and for North Hunterdon Youth Baseball and Softball and the memory of a very special little girl!
